name day.

name day.
november 12th is the latvian name day for kaijas and kornelijas! hurray, me! though recent jokes and slip-ups by family members in referring to me as kornelija have me marginally suspicious that i may be living a lie 😀

there are usually 2-3 names per day on the calendar. then there’s the one day in…may or march, i think, where it’s the name day for one name and, literally "all other non-standard names". so even if you’re a pedro, there’s room for you in the latvian name day calendar 🙂

name days are a big deal in latvia (and many other eastern european countries that celebrate them) — almost on par with birthdays. generally, in latvia on your name day you stock up on food and drinks because friends and family will show up unannounced at your house to help you celebrate and bombard you with flowers. it’s not part of the name day culture to invite people and, though it may seem odd, you’ll get funny looks if you invite anyone over to celebrate a name day.

since today was sunny, blue skies and i had slept until roughly noon, i had lots of energy to go to the woods to stomp about and kick muddy leaves in my new boots. what better way to break them in?

all i ask is that you view it on black 🙂
HAPPY KORNELIJA KAIJA DAY!
